Traveler's Notebook - Blue

What it is

The TRAVELER’S notebook in Regular size, blue — item 15239006. A cowhide leather cover roughly nine inches tall, with an elastic cord running down the spine that holds a paper refill in place. The starter set includes the cover, one blank refill on Midori’s MD paper, a cotton storage bag, and a spare elastic. The covers are made by hand in Chiang Mai. The paper is made in Japan.

That is the entire product. No binding, no clasp, no cover art. A band, a hide, and paper.

Why it’s on this list

Most good notebooks are consumables priced like heirlooms: you fill two hundred pages, you throw the cover away, you buy another cover. The TRAVELER’S inverts that. The cover is permanent and improves — the blue darkens, the corners round, the scratches your bag puts in it stop being damage and start being record. The paper is the part you consume, and refills are cheap.

The paper earns it too. MD paper takes fountain pen ink without feathering or bleeding through, which most notebooks at this price cannot claim.

What to know before you buy

• It is not A5. Regular size is taller and narrower — about nine inches by five. A5 inserts will not fit. Buy TRAVELER’S refills or one of the many third-party refills cut to the size.
• One refill fits comfortably. Carrying two or three at once requires a connecting band, sold separately. Most people find this out after the notebook arrives.
• The refill in the box is blank. Lined, grid, and dot refills are separate purchases.
• The leather is barely finished. It scuffs, it water-spots, it darkens where your hand sits. That is the design. If you want a cover that still looks new in a year, this is the wrong notebook.
• The elastic is a wear item. One spare comes in the box; replacements cost almost nothing.
• Buy something else if you want a book, not a system. A sewn notebook that opens flat and asks nothing of you — a Leuchtturm1917, a Rhodia — is cheaper and simpler. The TRAVELER’S rewards tinkering, and tinkering is an excellent way to avoid writing.
• Passport size is the one to buy if you want it in a jacket pocket. Regular does not go in a jacket pocket.
