The Essentials Reading & Writing

Best Book Light Ever

A rechargeable lamp that hangs around your neck and puts light on the page instead of on the room. It is the least romantic object on this list, and it solves a problem no lamp solves.

Best Book Light Ever

What it is

The Glocusent LED neck reading light. A rechargeable lamp worn around the neck, with two bendable arms that aim light down at whatever is in your hands. Three color temperatures β€” amber, warm white, cool white β€” and stepped brightness on each arm. A 1,000 mAh battery, charged over USB-C, rated up to 80 hours on the lowest setting. It weighs roughly five ounces. The beam is deliberately narrow: bright on the page, dark two feet away.

Why it’s on this list

Bed is where most reading actually happens, and it is the worst-lit place in the house. An overhead lamp lights the room and the person next to you. A clip-on light clamps to the board and has to be moved every time the spine shifts. A neck light moves with your head. The page stays lit, both hands stay free, and the rest of the room stays dark.

This is a cheap plastic object and nobody will hand it down. It earns its place because it removes the last excuse for not reading at night, and because on the amber setting at midnight it is genuinely kind to the eyes.

What to know before you buy

  • Each arm is switched separately. There is no master off. Turning it off means clicking each arm through its brightness steps until it goes dark β€” which means a flash of full brightness on the way. It is the single most common complaint, and it is a real one at 1 a.m.
  • The neck band is thick. Propped up on pillows, it is fine. Lying flat or on your side, it presses.
  • The color-temperature button sits on the back of the band β€” where a pillow can press it for you.
  • No charge readout. An indicator turns green when charging finishes. While you are using it, you are guessing.
  • Use the amber setting. Cool white is bright, useful for knitting or close repair work, and harsh for reading in bed.
  • Buy something else if you read sitting up. At a desk or in a chair, a real lamp is better light for less money. If you want something for a jacket pocket, a clip-on light is smaller and cheaper.
