What it is

A full-frame Cinema Line camera built around a 12.1MP Exmor R sensor and the BIONZ XR processor — the same low-resolution, huge-photosite approach that makes the a7S III famous in the dark. It records 4K up to 120fps, claims more than 15 stops of dynamic range, and runs an expanded ISO range up to 409,600 with a high base ISO of 12,800. It has an active cooling fan and a heatsink, so it does not tap out mid-take. Dual card slots take CFexpress Type A or SD. Sony includes the XLR top handle with two balanced inputs in the box, and the body is drilled with threaded mounting points so you can rig it without a cage. There is no viewfinder — a 3-inch articulating touchscreen is the only monitoring. Sony refreshed it as the FX3A in 2025 with an improved rear screen.

Why it’s on this list

Because it solves the problem that kills small productions: the camera stopping. Overheating, thirty-minute limits, no audio inputs, no way to mount anything without a cage — the FX3 answers all four in the box. The fan is the whole argument. It is a camera you can put on a tripod, point at a person, and forget.

The low-light performance is not a gimmick either. A 12.1MP full-frame sensor gives you enormous pixels, and the second base ISO at 12,800 means you can shoot in a room lit like a room.

What to know before you buy

• No viewfinder. Outdoors in bright sun, you will be buying a loupe or an external monitor. That is not optional, it is the cost of the design.
• It is not a stills camera. 12.1 megapixels. Fine for the web, thin for anything printed large or cropped hard.
• 4K120 crops slightly, and the high-bitrate all-intra codecs require CFexpress Type A cards. Those cards are expensive. Factor them in before you decide the body fits your budget.
• No internal RAW. RAW output goes over HDMI to an external recorder.
• Check which one you are buying. The FX3A refresh exists alongside older stock. Confirm the model before you pay.
• Two people should buy something else. If you shoot mostly photographs and want the same sensor with a viewfinder, the a7S III is the smarter body. If you do not need full frame, the APS-C FX30 gives you most of this camera’s discipline for roughly half the money — and for a lot of studio work, that is the correct answer.
