SmallRig LA-O65 Octagonal Softbox

What it is

The SmallRig LA-O65 is a 65 cm (25.6-inch) octagonal softbox with a Bowens speed ring and a quick-release frame. The ribs are stainless steel and the whole thing weighs about 725 g. In the box: two diffusion cloths, a 45-degree honeycomb grid and a carry bag. It mounts to SmallRig's own RC-series COB lights and to any other Bowens-mount fixture — Godox, Aputure, Neewer and the rest.

The quick-release mechanism is the reason to pick this one over a generic box. A traditional softbox is assembled by bending steel rods into sockets under tension, which is a two-person argument in a small room. This opens and folds like an umbrella.

Why it's on this list

Light quality is physics, not brand. The larger the light source relative to your subject and the closer it sits, the softer the shadow edge. A bare COB is a hard point source; wrap it in 65 cm of diffusion and pull it in close, and you have flattering, wrapping light with a round catchlight in the eye.

Sixty-five centimeters is the honest minimum for one person at close range — head-and-shoulders, an interview, a talking head, a product on a table. Go smaller and you're just moving a hard light around.

And the quick release matters more than the specs suggest. A modifier you dread setting up stays in its bag, and the light you don't set up doesn't exist. Buying the version that opens in one motion is buying the odds that you'll actually use it.

What to know before you buy

• Bowens mount only. Check your fixture. Most COB lights use Bowens; small on-camera LED panels and Profoto or Elinchrom heads do not, and no amount of wanting will make it fit.
• Sixty-five centimeters runs out fast. For two people, three-quarter length, or a full body, this is too small. You want 90 cm or larger, or a parabolic.
• It needs a stand that can handle it. A box this size on a flimsy aluminum light stand is a fixture on the floor. Put it on a C-stand and sandbag it.
• Use the grid. The included 45-degree honeycomb is what keeps the light off your background. Buying a soft source and then spilling it everywhere defeats the purpose.
• An umbrella may be the better buy. A $30 shoot-through umbrella throws softer, wider, cheaper light — it just sprays it everywhere. If you're shooting in a small room and don't care about spill, save your money.
