Mounted beside the screen, the phone becomes a second display you glance at instead of a device you pick up. It also solves two working problems cleanly — it holds the phone as a monitor when the phone is running a camera app, and it puts the phone at eye level when you want it as a webcam. And it charges while it does all of that, which means the phone stops being a thing you have to remember to plug in.

What to know before you buy

• The charging is not free. You are adding another USB-C cable to your desk, running to a 20W PD adapter. If your desk has one open port and no spare charger, this is a two-purchase problem.
• Wireless charging makes heat. A phone that is charging and doing real work — recording video, running as a continuity webcam — will get warm, and warm phones throttle. If the phone has a job to do, consider not charging it at the same time.
• It hangs weight off a thin lid. Load on the hinge is the honest weak point of every mount in this category. Expect a little screen wobble when you type hard, and do not leave it clamped on when you throw the laptop into a bag.
• Android needs a ring. So does a thick or non-MagSafe iPhone case. The magnet is only as good as what it is grabbing.
• Someone should buy less. If you only want the phone as a webcam, a plain non-charging clip costs a fraction of this, adds no heat, and adds no cable. Buy this one because you want the charging.
