Joshua Tree Coffee - Breakfast Bliss

What it is

Breakfast Bliss is an organic medium roast from Joshua Tree Coffee Company — a blend of Colombian and Honduran beans, roasted in small batches in Joshua Tree, California, on a Loring roaster. Twelve ounces, whole bean, USDA organic. The roaster's own framing is that it splits the difference between the boldness of their darker First Roast and the brightness of their Ethiopian: a balanced cup that doesn't fight you at 6am.

Why it's on this list

Two reasons, and neither of them is that it's the most exotic coffee you'll ever drink.

First: it's a small American company doing the hard version of the job. Joshua Tree Coffee won't run non-organic beans through their roaster at all — not as a marketing line, as a rule. Over 90% of the world's coffee is grown with heavy chemical input, and most of the cost of that lands on farmers, not drinkers. Buying from a roaster who has drawn that line is the whole thesis of this page: pay a little more, on purpose, for the people who do it right.

Second: it's a genuinely good daily cup. Medium roast, balanced, forgiving of a slightly sloppy pour-over on a Tuesday morning. A daily coffee doesn't need to be a tasting-note lecture. It needs to be excellent and repeatable.

What to know

• Buy whole bean and grind it yourself. This applies to every coffee on earth, but it applies double to a small-batch roaster you're paying a premium for — pre-ground coffee is stale coffee.
• It's a blend, not a single origin. That's a feature here. Blends are built for consistency; single origins are built for a specific cup on a specific day.
• Roast date matters more than roast level. Small roasters ship fresh. Drink it inside a month of the roast date and you'll taste why people bother.
