Godox iT20

What it is

The Godox iT20 is a mini hot-shoe flash the size of a matchbox: 41.5 x 41 x 32 mm, roughly 45 g. A built-in 7.4V, 300 mAh lithium cell charges over USB-C and gives about 700 full-power flashes with a 1.5-second recycle. Two modes — TTL and manual — an OLED readout, and manual power from 1/32 to 1/1 in third-stop increments. Magnetic snap-on accessories, a diffuser and CTO gels, come in the box.

It is sold in camera-specific versions — C for Canon, N for Nikon, S for Sony, F for Fujifilm, O for OM System and Panasonic, R for Ricoh. The listing here is the Sony iT20 S. There is also an iT22: the same electronics, taller package.

Why it's on this list

A speedlight in a drawer at home has a guide number of zero. This one lives in a jacket pocket and weighs less than a set of keys, so it is there when the light goes bad — a dim restaurant, a dark hallway, a portrait at dusk. TTL means you raise the camera and shoot without doing arithmetic.

The second use is quieter and better: as a trigger. At 1/32 power it will fire manual studio strobes optically, turning a cheap accessory into part of a real lighting setup.

Understand what you are buying. Ken Rockwell measured its guide number at 11 feet (3.4 m) at ISO 100 — a fraction of a full-size speedlight. Enough for close subjects and fill at a few feet. Nowhere near enough to fight daylight.

What to know before you buy

• It is weak. Close range or high ISO. For daylight fill at portrait distance, this is not the tool.
• The head does not tilt. No ceiling bounce. Direct light or a magnetic diffuser, that's the menu.
• Buy the version that matches your camera. The mount and TTL protocol are camera-specific. The wrong letter means no TTL.
• The battery is built in. When the cell dies, the flash does too.
• No wireless slave, no remote control, and the OLED is unreadable in direct sun. It sits on the shoe and fires. That's the feature set.
• Cheaper or better options exist. If you never use TTL, the manual-only Godox iM20 does the same job for less. If you need real power and a bounce head, buy a full-size speedlight — no amount of pocketability makes up for light you don't have.

How to use it

Put the half-CTO gel on indoors. Household bulbs are warm; unfiltered flash is daylight-balanced, and the mismatch is what makes flash photos look like flash photos. Gel the flash to match the room, set white balance to the room, and the fill disappears into the ambient light.
