Cocofloss Woven Dental Floss

What it is

A dental floss made by Cocolab, designed by a dentist, Dr. Chrystle Cu. Instead of a flat PTFE tape, it is a woven cord of more than 500 interlaced polyester threads — spun, the company says, from roughly 85% recycled bottle plastic — that expands under tension into something closer to a loofah than a string. It is coated in microcrystalline wax so it slides between contacts, and infused with coconut oil. The mint version is scented rather than sweetened. A spool holds 33 yards, which the company estimates at about two months of daily use for one person, and the dispenser is refillable.

Why it's on this list

Flossing is the household chore nobody audits. Slick tape floss goes in and out and often leaves the plaque exactly where it was. Cocofloss has texture, and texture is the entire mechanism: it catches and drags. You can feel the difference on the first pass, and the blue color makes what came off visible, which is either satisfying or alarming depending on your habits.

Be sober about the claim. The evidence base for flossing in general is thinner than most people assume, and there is no serious body of independent trials establishing that this floss outperforms that one. What can be said is narrower and still useful: a floss you will actually reach for every night beats a superior floss you abandon. Cocofloss is unusually pleasant to use, and pleasant is what makes a habit stick.

What to know before you buy

• It is expensive floss. Several times the price of a drugstore spool. Two months per spool, per person, adds up in a family.
• Tight contacts are the real problem. Because it is thick and woven, people with very tight teeth or crowded contacts may find it shreds, snags on old fillings, or will not pass at all. If that is you, a thin PTFE tape — Glide and its equivalents — is the correct product, and it costs a quarter as much.
• Braces and bridges need a threader. This is a plain spool. Buy the appropriate tool separately.
• A water flosser is not a substitute, and neither is this. They do different things. If your dentist has told you to use both, use both.
• The coconut oil and the scent are comfort features. Treat them as reasons you will keep flossing, not as therapeutic ingredients.
